I have noticed that whenever I participate in a drumming circle, I have big and deeply felt dreams that feel very mystical. I also experience physical and mental healing. Wondering if this is a common experience?

Me too!
I love the drumming circle I attend and the insights study group also, we rattle there before doing journey work etc. Many spirits and guides come to be with us.
Sometimes drumming before the study group for journey work also.
I also drum and or rattle at home when the mood strikes me.
It is very healing for me as it is for you.

Hi Donna,
I was wondering if I need to be a part of a drum circle in order to learn how to drum properly or can I just purchase a drum and do what feels right?
Of late I have felt a pull toward drumming but have not found a circle near me. There is a place close by that sells beautiful african drums for not too much money.
Love and light,
Tracey

Otoharo!
When drumming was first presented to me, I was not very fired up about it, but I got one at the local music store. It is an Irish drum with a beater that one holds in the hand and does sort of flip flops with it. I bought timpani drum sticks. That makes a soft mellow sound. Then when I was so very troubled, I took my drum down to the river, and drummed where no one would hear me. I took it into the woods with me. Drumming felt so good though I did not know why.
Eventually, I drummed for a long time at the river, and suddenly saw flashing lights. I discovered that this was the energy of the fourth demension. I was challenged by my mentor to bring that into this dimension. Well, how can one do that?
Recently, ego had me tied up and I was having difficulty freeing myself. So me and my drum took off to the river and spent a half day drumming. I find that sitting on the earth helps with the effect of drumming.
I have never been a part of a drumming circle. Solitude makes a good participant for drumming.
Around here Native Anmericans build drums and teach people how to make their own drums. that is the best kind to have for spiritual work.
Good drumming for all!

Tracey,
For getting balance and the effects of vibrational energy benefit beating a drum by yourself will be of help. Be sure to get yourself grounded before you begin.
There is much to be said for being a part of a community of drummers especially led by a Shaman as they clear the room and each person and each person gets a healing. The Shaman keeps the circle clear and removes any unwanted visitors that try to come in.
*I just posted all about each round of the Shamanic drumming that we do and then erased it as thought it might be too much information for someone who might try this alone without the benefit of someone there who could control anything that might happen or get rid of any unwelcomed visitors. This style of drumming involves journey work.
At any rate Tracey I would recommend you look for a frame drum of at least 18 " diameter that has a nice deep sound that resonates with you rather than a Dejembe type drum. I have used both and feel the frame one is best for Native drumming. Clear your drum with Reiki and you can smudge it also. Being you have a Native American heritage this style of drum I think would be best for you. I think you will be a natural in your drumming. Get grounded and set clear intentions.
Feel free to email me and I can give you some instructions on the rounds of drumming.
Shamanic drumming is a totally different animal from "fun type" community drumming circles.

feather,
Hi.
Most of those with whom I have drummed over the years report similarly at one time or another (especially if the drumming is for journey work, accompanyment to healing, or celebration).
I have not heard any such reports from those beating the war drums.
:)
Cheers (a bit more sage and sweetgrass on the lodge rocks, please)

Tracey,
Hi.
As far as I can tell, there are different tempos and rhythms for different Intentions among various traditions

Hi, Finality,
Interesting what you say about sitting on the earth....easiest to do in the summer or fall here....otherwise, we are stuck indoors. My husband and I both made our own drums...I love mine, but I am also very attracted to the African drums...maybe I will purchase one someday......
Blessings,

Well, I am very excited to continue these circles.....I will attend my first Shamanic drumming circle on Friday. Even though my other drumming circles have not been "Shamanic", they still have deep spiritual effect...I have done a bit of journeying on my own, so I am interested to see how it is in a group. It is just fascinating to me because I have been exposed to so many types of healing work and this by far seems to have the deepest effect...

feather,
Hi.
There have been a few drumming sessions I have been in where most of the drummers were 'elders' and the drumming attained a uniform frequency sufficient to rend the ethers.
:)
Cheers,

Otoharo!
I remember sharing here on this board about my experience in a drumming group, they did not call it a circle. I had alerted the leader before hand that my beat is differnt. I had described how I walked around the house in this beat that comes from deep within me.
She insisted I come anyway. And she asked me to start off the drumming in the group, about thirty people in her basement meeting room. I was flabbergasted, as a new comer asked to lead off. But I did. No one could join me, of course. It was not their beat. Soon one person simply out drummed me with the usual beat of the group. I simply, softly continued my own beat while they took over the energy in their own way. That is why, I drum alone. I hegan drumming in a small (perhaps you would call it circle) group. We were led on jouneys by our leader. It was from this energy that I did my solitude drumming.
