phishing

Hi,
Just wanted to remind Cafe goers to be ware of phishing. I received a suspicous email that I am checking into. Not being very computer literate I may be making a mountain out of a molehill. But as Ive already had a bank notify me in the past re a break in their internal security & possible identity theft ( never did happen with me fortunately)..I thought it might be a worthwhile reminder.
From a Reuters on line article:
"In phishing schemes, fraudsters typically bait victims with email purportedly from legitimate online businesses. The emails direct recipients to bogus Web sites, where they are asked to re-input information such as credit card information and passwords".

Baiting people seems to be a trend these days. Please be careful. The emails look genuine.

peace & joy,

holobon,

- thanks for the reminder

- one of the best ways to follow up on such E-mails is to contact the institution (bank, e.g.) and ask if they have send such an E-mail (and provide them with the address from whence the suspicious E-mail came)

- I also got some mail about a year ago from a site purporting to be one of the banks with which we do business - I E-mailed the Bank's security and forwarded the suspicious E-mail to them - they phoned me back to say it was indeed a phishing expedition

- skilled security folks can help root out these scammers and thieves and the IPs they utilize

- but as you suggest, never give out personal and financial information to such un-solicited requests

Dear Firekeper,
I went to a scam site & found the exact letter that I had received, apparently has been around for years. Oddly enough it has been a long time since I had one of these, my server deletes most junk before it ever gets to my inbox. The letter mentioned bank & vendor & possible identity theft. I did alert the supposed source with complete information including header, etc. One has to be so techie to keep up with everything! Had no idea they could hijack you to a bogus link that looks like the real website. Can you imagine what good these people could do if they would use their genius & creativity to better the world!

peace & joy,
holobon

- Oh, I agree.

- but, I suppose for some 'do gooding' or simply honest work does not pay enough (and is too much efforet) - short-cut city again
