rattlesnakes

Stepping outside my front door to find a 3 foot rattlesnake is not my idea of fun. My foot was less than 12 inches from him as I exited the house. Anyone have any experience in getting them off your property? ( No, I do not own a gun or a machete). The snake was relatively calm, judging from the bulge in its middle, I assume it had recently eaten. Watching it slither around the outside of the house & into the backyard aged me a few years. Im uncomfortable in my own yard now. In 9 years have never seen one here before & am petrified that it will den & give birth nearby. Now I know why the birds, lizards & frogs have disappeared.

holobon,

- call your local wild life rescue folks - if they don't know they likely will be able to refer you

- also, there is a type of snake that hunts rattlers - I believe it is the king snake - if you can get one perhaps let it loose in your yard - they are non-poisonous

Dear Firekeeper,
Oh, I called animal control, the Sheriff, etc. Was given 2 snake handler's numbers & neither answered when I called. Have not seen the critter since so calling a snake handler now will probably not do much good. Have sprinkled Snake A Way around the entrances to the house but, of course, we have had heavy rains since then. When it dries up I will be buying more. Now... the king snake idea is one I will look into! Thanks!

- snakes, including rattlers, are known to seek higher, drier ground when there is flooding - perhaps the rattler on your doorstep was allowing its burrow to dry out

- most critters do not like having to hang out near people

- too many guns and machetes

Dear Holobon,
Maybe the rattler was a supernatural being visiting you. Looking at the Medicine cards may help. Good luck.
