Otoharo!
The outcome of reading and rereading Urantia I have come to visualize the world as two eights crossed. If I were able to put things on this board, I would draw it for you. All material lies in the horizontal eight. No materiality lies in the vertical eight. The center of being lies at the crossroads of these two eights. These are enormuos beyond imagining. All physical worlds include what we can see with the naked eye at night as one of seven such masses, that make up the horizontal. The vertical has no material and is what we label as void. There is always as much void as there is material.
In meditation, some people aim at being in the void.

I particularly agree with this:
"In meditation, some people aim at being in the void. "
I always believed it is used to benefit both worlds, not just being in the void, as you put it. Thanks for echoing. :)
Do you think this is so because of the stigma that says spiritual/religious = penance?

Otoharo!
I, myself, do not comprehend penance so I can not answer you.

Here I think we can define penance as living an austere life, under the fearful gaze of "a God", heaven/hell. Under these conditions it is possible to programme the masses into believing anything. And when I say austere, I refer to a state of extreme self-denial.
whereas what you are referring to gives one a sense of true freedom and fulfillment.

Otoharo!
It is true that I have never felt the compunction to live an austere life. How could a God be a God and not be free and enjoy us as free souls in the universe!
