Only read the first, and I thought our hero was a bit of a dweeb, Don Juan was downright scary, but it still was an amazing journey, and I wonder if I'd have the courage myself.
I wonder if it's all true?

Hi,
I loved his earlier books. He did a bit too much drug experimentation for my liking. But they were interesting.
Have you read them?

I read every single one of them, as they appeared. 12, I believe. I've read them in Spanish & English! Are they true? I think each one has to make that decision for himself. I think they are, you couldn't invent that.
The drugs only appear in the first couple of books - Don Juan was trying to expand Carlos' mind, as he couldn't see any other way of doing it.
A lot of murky 'history' has come out since he died (of liver cancer allegedly), but everyone seems to have a different take on it. I think in the world of the sorcerer, things are not what they seem.

Dear thais,
I read two of his books back in the early 80's. Scared me on Shamanism for a while. Not a good primer on the subject come to find out. Later on (in life) I realized that there's a big difference between a Shaman (healer) and a scorcerer.
Namaste,
Michael

arati,
/*\ Namaste :-}}
- many of the skills are interchangeable, so to speak
- a shaman may need to counteract the work of a sorcerer (which, inevitably forces the shaman into 'sorcerey')
- primaily it is the psychology of the two types of individuals and the two paths that differ so greatly

Dear Firekeeper,
Indeed an example of that ethical fine line.

Dear Michael,
I still am wary of shamans as the word is a derivative of "scam". Too many wanabees.
