I have been thinking that I should go to a retreat to meditate for a weekend or a few days. Just have a feeling this is something I should do! You probably all know what I mean. Has anyone ever tried any of these? There are some that are run by the Monks. This being my first choice. Some allow the public to join in by reservation. I know they meidtate for hours everyday after getting up at 5am and food is scare as they like to fast. This wouldn't bother me. There are some just a retreat with a Buddhist Temple. Easier hours and meals. Just looking for suggestion as to which is the best. I live on the East Coast and there are several around. If anyone has tried these before? Let me know your experience. Thank-You

Hi,
I did a vipasanna retreat years ago, the first for a week then couple of years later for 20 days, Intensive meditation is something that i highly recommend if one never done it before.
for female a week should be okay, for men need at least 3 week or a month. and remember the first 3 days the body still adjusting to the environment , so if you are tempted to quit after a day or two. it's normal reaction. :)
have fun.

I have been on retreat and highly recommend it. The place I went to was not run by monks but offered silent retreats with a regular schedule of meditation (sitting and walking),work, dharma talks. I looked at your profile and see you are from NC. Google Southern Dharma. They are also in NC and have a good selection and reasonable prices.

Thank you this is a place to start. I Didn't really want to go to someplace alone without some kind of reference. I'll check them both out.

Otoharo!
There are also yoga retreats for meditation. At least, here in the northwest there are. I have participated. It is great to be out in nature, spending yuur time alone meditating. The Northwest Reiki Retreat at Breitenbush is also a place for meditation. One can stay there even when no retreat is in session. There are little cottages scattered about. I love it!
