I was told that Christmas was a holiday fabricated in the 19th century. It was done to get the common people to stop celebrating the Bacchanalia--the festival worshiping the God Bacchus, the god of wine, partying and sensual pleasures(!). The Bachanalia celebration resultied in a week of wild partying in the streets filled with drinking beer (wine) and having sex in an outrageous sort of way. I guess the closest we come to it is probably the French with Bastile day, Although I heard that in Germany they celebrate a wild festival that is remeniscent of the Bacchanalia.....to bad we don't celebratge such wild odes to the God Baccus, 'Them days is over' . It sounds a lot more intereting than the way we now celebrate Christmas (boring). 'They'-the powers that be- decided to create Christmas and it was mainly a commercial venture the retailers promoted it in lieu of the Bachanalia. The Coca-Cola company supposedly had invented Santa Clause and that is why he is dressed in a red and white suit. As for the other stuff, the Chrstmas tree: German pagan religion worshiping the tree gods; St. Nicklaus I guess he was real too. Religion!
Any comments? Any thoughts?Or correct me if I am wrong!
But now we celebrate Christmas! Happy shopping!
Enjoy!

Hi Aim,
Seasons greetings to you and yours.
Just a quick note re Father Christmas, I have been led to believe the Father Christmas figure was around long before Coca Cola chose him - how this co became involved was in the changing of the colouring of the suit to red and white to match their logo/corporate colours. (and I must say it is an improvement from the dull browns and greens before)
The giving of gifts can be tracked to Europe by, I think, a real person named Nickalaus (sic), or something to that effect who delivered gifts to the children in the form of an apple if they had been good, and a lump of coal if they were not - delivered in their shoe (rings a bell) or their sock/stocking. He was made a saint by the church for his good deeds.
It certainly is interesting to look into and becomes more interesting rather than the commercialism we all seem to get caught up in these days.
In love & light

Dear aim,
Christmas boring? Wow, new one on me. Take away the commercial aspects & its still about sharing with family & friends, love & laughter & good times. It has gotten out of hand, but I still remember the excitement as a child: putting up the tree & decorating it, the holiday foods, visits from relatives, etc.
As a spiritual holiday, the birth of Christ is a joyous occasion for Christians.
There is the secular Christmas & there is the religous one...not the same thing at all.
LOL..I think youre miffed because its basically a G rated holiday & you're ready for an X rated one. Well, you just missed Fantasy Fest in Key West, Florida but there's always Mardi Gras.....BAGL
Namaste,
holobon
