The Invitation...from a Native American Elder

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living, I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain. I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it. I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own. I want to know if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, or to remember the limitation of being human.

It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself, if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty everyday and if you can source your life from its presence. I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy. I wantto know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "YES!"

It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children.

It doesn't interest me who you are or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

Dear Passion,
Is this written by Oriah MountainDreamer? I believe it is from her book "The Invitation". But I could be wrong. Nonetheless, it is beautiful!
Love,
Feather

Dearest feather,
I got it from a newsletter at a place I used to work. I loved it the first time I read it and recently came across it again (yesterday...which was a perfect time to re-read it). It is just signed "Author unknown" so you could be right...I've never read "Oriah Mountain Dreamer." If it has beautiful stuff like that in it I guess it would benefit me to read it. Glad it touched you...love, light and laughter to you...passion

I read this post to my 14-year-old daughter this evening while she practiced driving from Lawrence, to Baldwin, KS to pick up her friend.

A space opened up and she let me know her pain. She talked about how we ALL need to know how to listen, to really listen, and that is why she wants to be a healer, to listen in a way that leads others to their own truth.

I also shared this post with the daughter of my heroin addict family member ~ same glorious results. Each word, each phrase has an incredible power when spoken out loud ...

Somehow, as I was reading out loud ... I would read "your own pain, mine" and then I added the words, 'or another.'

pronouns, nouns and such are tuff for non~dualits

LOL

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

soooooooooooo

this is the first time I have done this in the cafe

it so lacks touch for me [and thence a bit non_Reiki]

((((((((((((((HUG)))))))))))))))))))))))))))

blessings on the healing ripple you propelled into my family

and to all Elders and the source

Passion,

This touched me deep in my soul. As I was reading it I realized that these qualities are what I want out of a life partner. To know and trust someone on the same level that I know and trust myself.

Thanks for sharing Passion and for the inspiration. All is not lost - if someone wrote this, there are others out there in this world who feel the way I do!!!!

Love, Light and Blessings,
Reikirose

P.S. And where are they??? ha-ha

Addendum to above message: I wanted so much to have a copy of this (and I am out of black ink at this time) that I went to the site; I put in "The Invitation...from a Native American Elder" and it came right up in BLUE AND RED so I was able to print it out. I want to send it to my daughter for her Birthday and to print it out on very special paper and frame it.

Thanks again, I've been so touched by this.

This beautiful piece of work was written by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. She had originally written it in a creative writing class and from there had it posted on the web. There was such a response to it (from the web) she wrote a book, also titled "The Invitation" which explains in detail where she came up with the idea for this poem, and what it means to her.

If anyone is interested, the ISBN # is 0-06-251584-5, published in 1999 by HarperCollins.

Sunshine to you all,
Featherpoint
