I think that the reason that you do not get anything from this person is your youth and inexperience.

Even when you are easily picking up stuff from people, you should also be recognizing that you are going where you don't have permission to go.
Not everyone wants to have their innermost thoughts/feelings picked up on, and then (HORRORS!!!) discussed with additional people.
This person doesn't want you to pick up on the private stuff. Honor that wish by backing &&&***%%$$# off!
That's is like following that person into the bathroom when s/he is clearly telling you that you aren't welcome.

As with any ability, you don't have the priority simply by being able to do something. Learn to honor people by only going where you are invited.
BTW, just because someone isn't shielding from you, doesn't mean you should go there, either. Yes, it is fun for you now, because it is new for you, don't abuse that ability.
There is a person that comes to see me where I work, on occasion, and he tells me that he can't read me..at all. One evening he was doing the same thing (seems to be a game with some people....it is really annoying) and I asked if I could give him a bit of reiki. I think he has now quit drinking for good.
