Thought that I would give this board a try, as I have lived in Hoboken
for 11 years and have seen lots of changes. I came here after
college in 1990. Back then Hoboken was a town that was attracting
an artistic community as its residents, as rents were affordable and
space available. If you can believe it, I had a one bedroom on 4th st.
for $400 which i shared with a roommate.
Not to get overly mushy on the past, but the thing that i really miss
about those days is the sense of community that I felt. Many of the
friends that I had here have moved to Jersey city, or Brooklyn. I have
been sort of keeping to myself as I have felt that Hoboken had
become very transient. The shyrocketing rent and booming
construction is attracting young high paid professionals to the area,
but with the market in such a state, many are loosing jobs and having
to give up apartments. I have had so many new neighbors in my
building, across the hall, and downstairs, that I am reluctant to
introduce myself anymore, knowing that they will be gone soon.
So, here I am. I am turning over a new leaf, Opening my mind a bit,
and wanting to get to know my neighbors. I have faith that the
community that drew me here many years ago is still well and alive,
and perhaps it is me who has just lost touch. Let me know if there
are others like me out there.
